Greg Digneo ran a marketing agency from 2008 to 2015, burned out, went in-house, and started Content Guppy in 2021. That arc shows up in how unsentimental he is about traffic as a goal.
Most Of Your Traffic Is Not Worth Anything

“Because only two or 3,000 of those visitors actually are valuable to the business.”
Greg Digneo, Content Guppy
Said about a much larger monthly number. The ratio is the point: the reporting line everyone optimises is mostly composed of people who will never buy, and averaging them into a single figure hides the small population that matters.
Which raises the obvious question of what the rest of the traffic is for — and that is where his answer gets interesting.
Spend The Traffic On Something You Keep

“Get your, build a hundred thousand person newsletter, a 10,000 listenership podcast, build a 10,000 subscriber, a hundred thousand subscriber YouTube channel with that traffic.”
Greg Digneo
The instruction is to convert a rented audience into an owned one while you still have it. Search traffic is borrowed and repriceable. A newsletter list, a podcast audience and a subscriber base are not.
Note the framing: with that traffic. The organic programme is not the destination, it is the input.
Where Buyers Actually Come From
“or because they had read the blog one time or because they had heard us on a podcast.”
Greg Digneo
Describing the real provenance of deals — a blog post read once, an appearance heard on a show. Neither is attributable in a dashboard and both are decisive, which is precisely why they get cut when budgets tighten.
He is also clear on where links come from in practice for a software business: not primarily guest posts, but earning placement in the top-ten roundups and comparison pieces buyers actually read.
Tie It Back To Revenue As Fast As You Can
“The thing that you have to do as a salesperson or a person selling SEO services, whether you’re in-house selling it to your boss or you’re an agency selling it to a client is you want to tie that back to revenue as fast as you possibly can.”
Greg Digneo
His framing of the discipline is that SEO is the vehicle — it gets attention to the site and answers the question. The other half of the job starts after that, and it is the half that gets measured.
