Drew Dorenfest: SEO for Small Businesses, Cited Content & the Trailer Editor Mindset

In this episode of the Unscripted SEO Podcast, Jeremy Rivera sat down with Drew Dorenfest β€” a former Hollywood video editor who built Client Magnet CRM to bring SEO and email marketing to small businesses. Drew’s background editing trailers for Netflix, Apple, and Warner Brothers shaped a very specific and useful content philosophy: condense the complicated into three sentences, design for the scanner, not the careful reader.

From Hollywood Trailers to Small Business SEO

Drew went freelance almost a decade ago and three years ago formed his own LLC. When he tried pitching video services to businesses outside entertainment, most weren’t ready for video. What they needed, he realized, was reviews β€” the deciding factor in almost any local purchase decision. Reviews led to SEO, SEO started working for his own business, and Client Magnet CRM grew from there.

His early approach: offer it free to close friends first. A couple of months later they were feeling more sales and more calls. “Conversions are the only metric I care about,” he told Jeremy. “Traffic is nice, but conversions β€” more sales β€” is something the business owner can actually feel.”

Cited Content Outranks National Brands

Drew’s most striking case study involves a small tax firm in LA and Las Vegas. He built hyperlocal content β€” gambling tax guides, California vs. Nevada tax code breakdowns, student loan interest deduction explainers. Every post was reviewed by the actual tax professionals and cited primary sources (IRS.gov, official publications).

Within two weeks, the student loan post was ranking page one above IRS.gov, HR Block, and TurboTax. His framework: cited, verifiable, expert-reviewed content earns trust from both traditional crawlers and AI models. “ChatGPT and all these LLMs go: okay, this is an authoritative business with authoritative content.”

The Trailer Editor CRO Mindset

Editing a trailer means taking something complicated and compressing it into three clear, compelling sentences. Drew applies that directly to website copy. People scan for 30 seconds. If your copy assumes a careful reader, you’ve already lost.

Paired with Jeremy’s two-button CTA framework β€” a hard ask (buy now, book a call) and a soft ask (get the PDF, learn more) β€” the result is a homepage that serves every type of visitor: the ready buyer and the still-researching browser.

IRL + Digital: Building the Flywheel

Drew’s health food client went pure e-commerce and sales dropped because people couldn’t taste the product. When Drew built out the email systems (first-order discount, abandoned cart automation, regular send cadence) and the client returned to farmers markets, everything clicked. QR codes at the market point to the website and socials. Free sample converts to email subscriber converts to returning customer.

Entity Basics & the About Page

Drew’s number one free piece of advice: have an about page, make it good. Add internal links and clean up navigation. That’s the starting line for any small business struggling to rank. For competitive categories, it’s consistent content depth β€” brick by brick β€” until the flywheel builds momentum.
